Brief description 

The position of software engineer consists of researching, designing, developing, creating, and modifying general computer applications software or specialized utility programs and testing operating systems-level software and network distribution software. It also consists of setting operational specifications and formulating and analyzing software requirements. 

Tasks

1. Develop and direct software system testing and validation procedures, programming, and documentation;
2. Write computer programs of higher complexity or with specific performance, connectivity or business logic requirements;
3. Supervise the work of programmers, technologists and technicians and other engineering and scientific personnel.
4. Analyze user needs and software requirements to determine the feasibility of design within time and cost constraints;
5. Elaborate Software and Hardware Architecture orientation and monitor compliance to design principles and guidelines;
6. Advise customer about, or perform, maintenance of software system;
7. Document business requirements using formalism such UML or other object-oriented modelling tools;
8. Analyze information to determine, recommend and plan the installation of a new system or modification of an existing system;
9. Confer with data processing and project managers to obtain information on limitations and capabilities for data processing projects;
10. Consult with customers or other departments on project status, proposals and technical issues such as software system design and maintenance;
11. Consult with engineering staff to evaluate interface between hardware and software, develop specifications and performance requirements and resolve customer problems;
12. Coordinate installation of a software system;
13. Direct software programming and development of documentation;
14. Write computer programs of higher complexity or with specific performance, connectivity or business logic requirements;
15. Modify existing software to correct errors, to adapt it to new hardware or to upgrade interfaces and improve performance;
16. Prepare reports and correspondence concerning project specifications, activities and status;
17. Store, retrieve, and manipulate data for analysis of system capabilities and requirements.

Qualifications and requirements 

1. A bachelor’s degree in a computer-related field or equivalent;
2. Ability to use logic and reason to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, and to give full attention to what other people are saying;
3. Ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
4. Knowledge of various programming languages, and the ability to determine how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes.
